Pix has transformed the way people and businesses move money in Brazil. Since its launch in 2020, the system has made payments and transfers faster and simpler, allowing users to send and receive funds at any time, including weekends and holidays.

The solution has also become part of Brazil's everyday financial routine. According to a study by the Brazilian Central Bank, more than half of payment transactions carried out in Brazil in the second half of 2025 were made through Pix. In total, there were 42.9 billion transactions over six months, 24.3% more than during the same period in 2024.

To put this volume into perspective, in December 2025, the system reached a record of 313.3 million transactions in a single day, moving R$179.9 billion, according to Agência Brasil.

These figures show that Pix is no longer simply another way to pay or transfer money. It has become an important part of Brazilian financial infrastructure. For businesses, this means offering customers a payment method that is already part of the daily routines of consumers and companies.

The widespread adoption of Pix has also increased the need to integrate it into companies' products and systems. This is where Banking as a Service (BaaS) comes in: through BaaS infrastructure, a company can incorporate Pix, accounts, payments, and settlement into its products without having to build the entire infrastructure internally.

What is Pix?

Pix is the instant payment system created by the Central Bank of Brazil to enable account-to-account transfers and payments within seconds, at any time and on any day of the week.

Available since November 2020, the system can be used by individuals, businesses, and public entities. Its continuous availability has expanded the possibilities of digital payments and enabled real-time transactions to be incorporated into different financial products and processes.

How does Pix work?

To make a Pix payment, the payer initiates the transaction through the financial institution where they hold an account. The payment can be made using a Pix key, QR Code, or the recipient's bank account details.

After authorization, the transaction is processed and settled within seconds. Funds become available to the recipient virtually in real time, even when the payment is made outside business hours, on weekends, or on holidays.

Behind this experience is infrastructure managed by the Central Bank, including the Instant Payment System (SPI), which is responsible for settling transactions between institutions, and the Transaction Account Identifiers Directory (DICT), a centralized addressing database that supports Pix keys.

For businesses, this means that integrating Pix goes beyond offering another payment option. Transactions need to be connected to the company's collections, settlement, reconciliation, and financial management processes.

What are the main features of Pix?

Pix was designed to make electronic payments faster, more accessible, and more efficient. Its main features include:

24/7 availability: Payments and transfers can be made every day, including weekends and holidays.

Real-time settlement: Funds become available to the recipient within seconds.

Multiple use cases: Pix can be used for person-to-person transfers, in-store payments, e-commerce, collections, business-to-business transactions, and other situations.

Digital integration: Businesses can incorporate the system into their own products and financial journeys, automating processes and connecting incoming payments to their operations.

Main Pix payment modalities

Pix has evolved beyond instant transfers and now offers features designed to address different payment and collection needs.

Pix Cobrança

Pix Cobrança allows businesses to generate payment requests using QR Codes and other payment initiation methods.

The feature can be integrated into collection and payment processes, making it easier to automate these steps and reducing the need for manual operations.

Pix Automático

Pix Automático allows customers to authorize recurring payments just once. After authorization, future charges can be made automatically.

The solution can be used for subscriptions, memberships, insurance payments, and other recurring services.

Pix por aproximação

Pix por aproximação allows users to initiate payments by bringing a compatible device, such as a smartphone, close to a payment terminal.

This modality expands the possibilities for in-person payments and creates an even more integrated experience with digital devices.

Pix Agendado

Pix Agendado allows users to schedule a transfer for a future date. It can be used for different types of payments and fund movements.

These modalities make it possible to incorporate Pix into different financial journeys, from one-time payments to recurring collections.

How can businesses use Pix?

For businesses, Pix can be incorporated into different stages of financial operations. Common use cases include:

  • receiving payments;

  • collecting payments from customers;

  • paying suppliers;

  • transfers between accounts;

  • moving funds;

  • financial settlement;

  • recurring payments;

  • integration with platforms and financial products.

The main benefit is the ability to connect these flows directly to the company's systems. With the right integration, Pix becomes more than just a payment method and becomes part of the company's financial infrastructure itself.

This makes it possible to automate processes, reduce manual activities, and centralize information about financial transactions.

Pix as part of financial infrastructure

Pix has changed how money moves in Brazil and established a new standard for digital payments. For businesses, however, taking advantage of this infrastructure involves more than simply offering Pix as a payment method.

Accounts, payments, collections, settlement, and reconciliation need to be connected to the systems and products used by the company. The more integrated these processes are, the simpler financial management tends to become.

This is where Banking as a Service (BaaS) becomes relevant. Through APIs, a BaaS platform allows businesses to incorporate financial services into their own products without developing the entire banking infrastructure internally.

In practice, this makes it possible to integrate features such as digital accounts, Pix, payments, and settlement directly into the journeys used by customers.
